Karisse Carmack: Audio Assignment #2- Man on the Street Interviews

  1. Man on the Street Revision: When I first conducted the interviews, my audio was 18 min and 52 sec long. I am glad that I was able to cut it down significantly, but I feel as though I should cut out some more. In the beginning I was concerned that I would cut out too much audio that it would compromise the story. I also wished that I recorded a few more seconds of ambient sound to draw the audience in and make my story more interesting. For example, I could have went to the Stamp Union bookstore and recorded sounds of the cash register, and the cashier putting items in a bag. I tink that the audio for this piece was better than the audio in the expert interview assignment. I had practiced using my recorder prior to working on this assignment, but next time I should practice in different environments (i.e. a quiet room, outside on a windy day, etc.). Lastly, I wished that I created a better conclusion, even though I did not know what the interviewees were going to say. For example, I could have closed by saying that the majority of students are going to spend less not only because of the economy, but because they are students and are naturally conscientious about money. In my segment I just simply said "Thank You." Also, I recognized that I need to be aware of my movements. Toward the end of the first and second interviews, you heard the sound of the wind as I moved the recorder way from the subjects. During my interviews I had a notepad with my questions in front of me, but I said "um" several times, usually when I was asking a follow-up question. Next time, I should come up with a list of possible follow-up questions, even though I did not know how the students would respond. Overall, I think this assignment was an improvement from the expert interview, but could have been better.
