If I were actually assigned this story by a real news agency, I would do a few things differently. I would find out what Michaele Salahi did on the day of the party, like getting her nails done or picking up her dress. I would follow her throughout the day, all leading up to the moment she and her husband crashed the party.
I would open the story with the couple arriving at the White House. A listener unfamiliar with the story would think the two were guests to the party.
I would then cut back to the morning of, with Michaele and Tareq getting ready throughout the day. I could find out where Michaele got her dress, and interview whoever sold it to her. ("When Michaele bought the dress she was just so excited," said so-and-so, the dressmaker. "She kept talking a/b the party!")
I would then detail the couple arriving at the party, and what happens next--- they trick their way past the Secret Service and gain access to the State Dinner. I would finish the piece w/ public comments made by the White House and a few man-on-the-street interviews to show public opinion.
This is the class blog for Journalism 328G/28G, "Special Topics in News Writing and Reporting," where we offer a crash course in audio, photo, and video.
